There are a lot of things to look for, but industry credentials are definitely important.
In addition to being formally trained on machines from a wide variety of manufacturers - including Nuova Simonelli, Victoria Arduino, La Marzocco, Rancilio, Astoria/Wega, Fetco and more, I have also been qualified in the SCA’s AST Coffee Technician Skills Program (inactive), and I still hold three trade licenses in Heavy Equipment/Construction Machinery repair (425A), Powered Lift Truck Technician (282E) and LP-Gas Fuel Systems for Industrial Trucks (ICE-IV-P) in a career spanning over 30 years -13 of them in the Specialty Coffee industry. I’ve been experienced in managing fleet lifecycles of equipment deep in the 8-figure value range, managing six-figure parts inventory systems, mentoring apprentices, writing and delivering training materials for student technicians, and specializing in diagnostics of electronic vehicle management systems including AC drive and battery systems for forklifts. Whereas some coffee machine technicians may only have one perspective to apply to a problem, I’ve spent a lifetime building a broad foundation of related experience - giving me a full quiver of arrows to apply from all angles: the manufacturer, the industry regulator, the parts supplier, the designer, the technician - and of course, you: the owner/operator who needs to make a good living!
